The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading institutes worldwide for molecular and biomedical basic research and teaching. It is home to more than 30 research groups with scientists from over 40 countries. Research at the Biozentrum focuses on the areas of Cell Growth & Development, Infection Biology, Neurobiology, Structural Biology & Biophysics and Computational & Systems Biology. With its more than 550 employees, the Biozentrum is the largest department at the University of Basel’s Faculty of Science.

The main focus of our research group is the characterization of the molecular mechanisms underlying the adaptations of skeletal muscle to exercise and disease. We study the function of PGC-1alpha, a transcriptional coactivator, in regulating gene expression in muscle. In our lab, we combine in vitro approaches (biochemistry, molecular biology) with cell culture (cell lines, primary muscle cells) and validate our results in mouse models in vivo. In particular, we are studying the transcriptional adaptations of skeletal muscle to external and internal stimuli and the resulting effects on systemic physiology. For this purpose, we have transgenic mouse models as well as a large range of mouse phenotyping instruments at our disposal.

For a European Research Council (ERC)-funded project focused on genomic analysis of muscle cell plasticity using state-of-the-art next generation sequencing methods and novel computational approaches in combination with analysis of muscle cell function and in vivo physiology, we are currently looking for motivated and well-trained postdocs and PhD students to complement our team.

Requirements for postdocs:
Applicants should be highly motivated, team players, have a PhD or MD/PhD degree with a strong background in molecular and cell biology. Moreover, extensive experience in experimental work on metabolism, mouse physiology, skeletal muscle biology, transcriptional regulation, systems approaches or bioinformatics is ideal.

Selection will furthermore be based on the educational background, motivation, independence and creativity. Knowledge of English is required, German helpful, but not necessary. Starting date by arrangement. Salary according to institutional guidelines.

Requirements for PhD students:
Applicants should be highly motivated, team players, have a MSc, Diploma or an equivalent degree with a solid background in molecular and/or cell biology methodology. Experience with animal experimentation and/or computational biology is a plus. Good knowledge of English is expected, German is helpful but not necessary. Entrance by arrangement. Salary according to the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation.

How to apply:
please send your CV including a list of publications, motivation letter including a statement of research background and interests, transcripts/grades and 2-3 letters of recommendation as pdf file(s) by email to Jny Wittker (jny.wittker-at-unibas.ch).

Review of applications will begin on Dec 1, 2016, and will continue until the positions are filled. For further information, see and/or contact Prof. C. Handschin.
