The Department of Finance is currently inviting applications for doctoral scholarships, with a starting date of August 2017. The PhD specialization in Finance focuses on developing doctoral students’ theoretical knowledge and methodological skills required to become successful researchers in finance. We encourage applicants with strong quantitative skills and a background in finance, economics, statistics and mathematics. Candidates should express an interest in an academic career in research and teaching, and have good communication and analytical skills. We welcome project proposals, theoretical or empirical, in areas such as asset pricing, banking, corporate finance, market microstructure, portfolio management, and behavioral finance. After successful completion of the programme, we expect our graduates to seek employment at leading academic institutions.

The Department of Finance has an international faculty with PhD’s from some of the world’s leading universities, including UC Berkeley, Carnegie-Mellon, Stanford and Toulouse. The department’s research spans both corporate finance, asset pricing and market microstructure. The doctoral programme is an important part of the department’s research activities and of NHH’s vision as a leading business school in Europe. The selected candidates are expected to work closely with faculty and will join a group of 10-12 PhD students in the department. Their place of work will be at NHH in Bergen, Norway.

The PhD Programme

The PhD Programme at NHH is a four-year fully-funded programme, which combines an intensive course component with active research and teaching/work experience, preparing the school’s graduates for competitive careers at national and international academic institutions and industry.

PhD Research Scholars receive their own office space within their department and enjoy a highly stimulating and rewarding research environment. The PhD Research Scholars receive feedback on their work through close interaction with their supervisor/s, and faculty during regular seminars.

PhD Research Scholars are required to combine their studies and research with 25% work as a teaching and/or research assistant during their employment period.

Preference will be given to qualified applicants with research proposals that fit best with the research interests of the Department of Finance. Preference will also be given to female applicants in the event of equivalent qualifications.

The annual salary for the PhD Research Scholar position is currently 435 100 NOK gross (equivalent to approximately € ۴۸ ۰۰۰ or USD 50 500). This salary ensures a fair standard of living in Norway, and is subject to Norwegian taxes and benefits, including health care provision.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the PhD Programme. It is necessary that academic and English language criteria are met. All applications must include evidence of adequate GMAT or GRE test scores and TOEFL or IELTS test scores. Applicants from Nordic universities are exempt from this requirement. Applicants should ensure that all test results are sent from testing institutions and received by NHH by latest 15 February 2017, unless you are waved.

Applicants for the PhD Research Scholar position do not need to apply separately for admission to the PhD programme.

Information about education, prior positions and work experience, statement of purpose, tentative research proposal (5-10 pages), certificates with grades and other relevant documentation, including a complete CV, should be attached with the application.

Please provide us contact details of two reference persons. Letters of recommendation may also strengthen your application, but this is not mandatory. Such letters should be submitted by email directly to NHH (hr-phd@nhh.no) from the referees, by latest 15 February 2017.
