Center for Biopharmaceuticals / Dept. of Drug Design and Pharmacology
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND)
University of Copenhagen

Center for Biopharmaceuticals (Dept. of Drug Design and Pharmacology) is offering a three-year PhD fellowship in ion channel function and biophysics. The PhD fellowship is financed by Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen (KU SUND) and the Center for Biopharmaceuticals. The fellowship is available from 1 April 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Project description
The PhD project will focus on ion channels, which mediate flux of ions across membranes in response to binding of endogenous stimuli, such as membrane voltage or neurotransmitters. Ion channels are widely expressed in humans and considered important therapeutic targets, as their dysfunction can result in various disorders. The technically challenging project will involve the use of novel chemical biology tools in combination with electrophysiology to investigate ion channel pharmacology and function. Specifically, this will entail using genetically encoded unnatural amino acids and the use of high-resolution electrophysiological approaches, such as two-electrode voltage-clamp and patch-clamp to study basic aspects of ion channel function.

Principal supervisor
Assoc. Prof. Stephan Pless, Center for Biopharmaceuticals, Dept. of Drug Design and Pharmacology.
