The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest rated institution of research and education with 28 000 students and 7000 employees. Its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally esteemed research communities make UiO an important contributor to society.

The Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) is an interdisciplinary focus field for material and energy research at the University of Oslo. SMN has focused on basic research in renewable energy and environmentally friendly use of fossil energy sources. The center consists of research groups from the Department of Physics (Fi) and Chemistry (Ki), has about 100 employees from around the world and manages more than 80 projects funded by the EU, the RCN and others.

۱ position as postdoctoral research fellow is available at Department of Physics / Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN).

The fellowship period is 2 years. Starting date no later than September 1st 2017. No one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution.

Job/Project description:

The postdoctoral position in theoretical semiconductor physics  –  first-principles modeling of defects in semiconductors  –  is associated with the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) at the Department of Physics, University of Oslo (UiO).

The aim of the studies is to explore novel concepts and ideas, as well as to elucidate and understand fundamental properties of semiconductors. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will theoretically functionalize defects in semiconductors; more specifically to model, explore, and analyze various dopants, point defects, and complexes in advanced semiconductors by means of first-principles atomistic methods based on the density functional theory (DFT). She/he will perform DFT-based calculations of materials and systems with extraordinary potential, utilizing state-of-the-art computer simulation packages on national and international HPC resources. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will be part of several research tasks that involve advanced theoretical investigations as well as close collaboration with the research groups within the FUNDAMeNT project.

The position is part of the Frontier Research Project “Functionalizing Defects in Advanced Semiconductors” (FUNDAMeNT), funded jointly by the Research Council of Norway and UiO. The project’s primary objective is to accelerate processes towards groundbreaking functionalities with a holistic approach to defects in advanced semiconductors and nanostructures, linking defect behavior with electrical, optical and magnetic functionalities and targeting size dependence of defect properties on nanostructure size and shape.A strategic aim of FUNDAMeNT is to consolidate the team as an internationally leading research environment in advanced semiconductors and defect physics, spanning from materials synthesis, characterization, and theoretical analyses to realization and evaluation of test (device) structures.
