بورسیه دکتری فیزیک در نروژ

There is a vacancy for a PhD position at Department of Physics and Technology (http://www.uib.no/en/ift) within acoustics. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years.

About the project/work tasks

The acoustics research group builds on 50 years of experience within experimental, theoretical, and numerical acoustics. The group focuses on fundamental research and collaborates with external partners on applications. Current research includes guided ultrasonic waves, ultrasonic fiscal flow metering of oil and gas, marine/fisheries acoustics, and material characterization.

The candidate shall work within the group’s long-term research area “Diffraction effects in interaction of sound beams with leaky ultrasonic guided waves”. The work is aimed at investing and explaining the physical mechanisms underlying some newly discovered diffraction effects observed for ultrasonic beam transmission of a solid plate immersed in a fluid. Such beam diffraction effects include signal enhancement (“signal amplification”), resonance frequency downshift, beam narrowing, and energy concentration of the field transmitted through the plate. The understanding and utilization of these mechanisms may have significant influences on current and future industrial measurement methods, within diverse fields such as non-destructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E), material characterization, material surface inspection, oil and gas pipeline inspection, corrosion measurement, composite material evaluation, etc.

The work will address influences from (a) transducer nearfield/farfield effects, (b) source and receiver transducer apertures, (c) material data for the solid plate and the embedding fluid, (d) degree of fluid coupling, (e) plate viscoelasticity, and (f) normal and oblique beam incidence to the plate. The relationship to apparently different phenomena discussed in the literature are of significant interest, such as negative and zero group velocity modes, the direction of energy flow in the plate, and “backward propagating waves” in the plate. The work will involve measurements and quantitative three-dimensional numerical modelling of the measurement system, for leaky Lamb waves in near-elastic and viscoelastic plates. The relationships between the measured and modelled field characteristics, and the three-dimensional (complex) frequency-wavenumber dispersion diagrams for Lamb and leaky Lamb waves in elastic and viscoelastic plates, are to be investigated.

The work will build on prior PhD works in the group, and represent continuation of a collaboration with Christian Michelsen Research AS within this scientific field. Through the PhD work the candidate will obtain core expertise within a very dynamic and internationally rapidly developing field in ultrasonic industrial instrumentation and science, of significant economic and industrial importance for the national and international community.
