The Doctoral Programme in Educational Studies offers quality research training for postgraduate students pursuing doctoral degrees in the field of education. The Doctoral Programme provides an opportunity for multidisciplinary and multimethodological research in education. The research themes of the doctoral degree programme cover education, training, teaching, learning, development and counselling, learning environments and teacher education. The Doctoral Programme in Educational Studies is a joint doctoral programme of the Philosophical Faculty and the Faculty of Science and Forestry.The disciplines included in the doctoral programme at the Philosophical Faculty are science of adult education, special education, educational science, home economics, craft science and early childhood education. The doctoral programme is also open to doctoral students in the Faculty of Science and Forestry pursuing a doctorate in physics, chemistry or mathematics if the theme of their doctoral dissertation is related to the research  topics of the doctoral programme.

We are now inviting applications for Doctoral Student Positions (Early Stage Researcher), Doctoral Programme in Educational Sciences, Joensuu and Savonlinna Campuses

The main duty of the early stage researcher (PhD student) working in the doctoral programme in Educational Sciences is to complete his or her doctoral dissertation in accordance with an approved research proposal. At the University of Eastern Finland, the goal is to complete the doctoral degree in four years of full-time study. The early stage researcher will work at the Philosophical Faculty or at the Faculty of Science and Forestry on the Joensuu or Savonlinna Campus of the University of Eastern Finland. Persons working on the Savonlinna Campus will move to Joensuu as from 1 August 2018, after which their place of employment will be in Joensuu.

A total of 13 early stage researcher positions are vacant in the doctoral programmes of the Philosophical Faculty. A maximum of 10 of these positions are intended for persons to study in the Doctoral Programme in Educational Studies. Decisions relating to early stage researcher positions in natural sciences will be made by the Faculty of Science and Forestry.

As a rule, the languages of instruction in the doctoral programmes are Finnish and English.

A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies. (UEF University Regulations, Section 31).

Doctoral student positions in the doctoral programmes may be applied for by persons already enrolled as postgraduate students at the University of Eastern Finland and by persons planning to complete their doctoral dissertation at the University of Eastern Finland. In these cases, the Master’s degree must be completed no later than by 31 July 2017. The degree certificate and a transcript of academic records must be delivered by email to earlyresearchers_sophi@uef.fi no later than by 15 August 2017. All other required documents need to be included in the application and submitted within the deadline.

Persons who are planning or completing their first doctoral degree can be appointed to the early stage researcher positions. Persons to be selected are required to fulfil the student admission criteria of the doctoral programme.
When filling the position, the applicant’s research proposal, the language skills required in postgraduate studies, earlier academic performance, the progression of the doctoral dissertation during possible previous funding, the duration of possible previous funding for the doctoral dissertation, and an evaluation of the feasibility of the research and postgraduate studies will be taken into consideration.

The research proposal will be evaluated on the following criteria: linkage of the research with the disciplines and themes of the doctoral programme; scientific and societal relevance, objectives, theoretical framework and concepts of the research; analysis and research methods; plan covering a timetable, publications and funding; analysis of ethical viewpoints; and the scientific level and innovativeness of the research proposal.

Early stage researcher positions are always filled for a fixed term (UEF University Regulations, Section 31). The maximum duration of the doctoral student positions is four years. The currently vacant doctoral student positions will be filled for a maximum duration of two years as from 1 January 2018 or as agreed (starting, however, in 2018). Earlier research funding (grant, scholarship or research conducted while in an employment relationship) will be taken into consideration in duration of the position.

The language requirements associated with the position are defined in the Government Decree 770/2009. Members of the university’s teaching and research staff are required to have command of the language they give teaching in (Finnish or Swedish). The Dean of the faculty may grant an exemption from the language proficiency requirements laid down in the Government Decree. The language of research and teaching associated with the positions can also be English. If the selected person carries out research and gives teaching in English, he or she needs be proficient in the English language as required for the position. The language proficiency required for the position refers to level B2 proficiency in English as defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (see the CEFR levels athttp://www.uef.fi/en/uef/open-vacansies/instructions). If the language of teaching and research is English, the person is not required to have the Finnish language proficiency referred to in the Government Decree or
elsewhere.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on levels 2-4 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (€۱,۹۸۵٫۸۵ – ۲,۴۷۵٫۳۱/ month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 46.3% of the job requirement component. The salary is determined in accordance with the phase of the PhD project and doctoral studies, as well as with personal performance.

– A copy of the degree certificate / diploma and a transcript of records relating to the academic degree that makes the person eligible for postgraduate studies. These documents are required from persons who do not have an existing right to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Eastern Finland. The documents need to be submitted in Finnish or in English. As regards translated documents, only a Diploma Supplement and/or other translations issued by the higher education institution or official translations by authorised translators are accepted.
– Copies of certificates/diplomas relating to the applicant’s language proficiency, if not indicated in the academic degree certificates/diplomas

The application needs to be submitted no later than 8 May 2017 (by 24.00 hours Finnish time) by using the electronic application form. The decisions on the early stage researcher positions will be made by faculty by 30 September 2017.
