Overview

A fully-funded (home fees) PhD studentship is available within the Chemical Crystallography group at Newcastle University. This position will focus upon the study and development of compounds with switchable characteristics in the solid state.

Molecular transitions, that are thermodynamically accessible, can be utilised in the design of highly functional exotic materials. These transitions can be designed to be switchable by controlled external stimuli such as temperature, pressure or light. There is a potential for these materials to have a range of applications from simple molecular switches and physical actuators to molecular storage devices. The successful student will build on the current extreme conditions knowledge to enhance the instrumentation for studying materials under non-standard conditions. They will also develop novel chemical systems for investigation under a range of stimuli to generate the next generation of switchable materials.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, you must have a real passion for research and have, or expect to receive, a good Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in one of the following subjects:

  • Chemistry
  • Physics.

Creativity and problem solving skills are a must, crystallographic experience is not a prerequisite as full training will be given.

How to apply

The candidate must apply through the University’s online postgraduate application form.  Only mandatory fields need to be completed however, you will need to include the following information:

  • insert the programme code: 8100F in the programme of study section
  • select ‘PhD School of Chemistry (full time), Chemistry ’ as the programme of study
  • insert the studentship code CY036 in the studentship/partnership reference field
  • attach a covering letter, CV and (if English is not your first language) a copy of your English language qualifications. The covering letter must state the title and code of the studentship, and state how your interests and experience relate to the project.  No personal statement is required.
