Job description:

The position is part of the Convergence environment “organ on a chip and nano-devices”. Convergence environments are interdisciplinary research groups that will aim to solve grand challenges related to health and environment. They are funded by UiO’s interdisciplinary strategic area UiO:Life Science.

This particular PhD project is a workpackage (WP) in this convergence environment and aims at developing integrated circuits (in complementary metal oxide silicon (CMOS)) high resolution sensor platforms for monitoring cell culture viability and performance. The developed sensors will be formatted in a modular manner to allow integration with sensors developed in other WPs, thus allowing a plug and play format for the generation of hybrid sensor arrays. The sensors will be used for the monitoring of essential cell parameters, such as growth of the cell culture, cell viability, specific functions of the cells (such as ion channel activation), and chemical analytes.

The candidate is expected to look into various sensor modalities of the array that can be realized on a CMOS integrated circuit. Local expertise includes ion sensitive field effect transistors (ISFETs), bio-impedance, and photo-pixels, all of which are sensors that do not require any chemical activation on the surface of a CMOS chip. However, we are interested in expanding into affinity sensors that do require chemical surface activation (e.g. immobilizing antibodies or aptamers on an electrode or ISFET surface to create an affinity sensor) and are particularly interested in candidates that do have experience in this domain, ideally combined with good knowledge in electronics in general or even integrated circuits in particular.

Requirements and qualifications:

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in a discipline relevant for the project.

Candidates should have experience in at least one of the following subjects: ISFETs, imagers, sensor electrodes, bio-impedance, immunosensors, affinity sensors or other bio-sensor and sensor front-end design, analog application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) layout design, mixed-signal integrated circuit design.

The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position. For more information see:
