Information about the department/the division
The Department of Biology and Biological Engineering is aiming at bridging cutting edge life science research with biochemical engineering, in order to emerge as the leading innovation center in the region. The research has broad applications in areas of health and industrial production of e.g. fine chemicals, food and energy. An important mission is to drive the development of novel and improved tools to study effects on a cellular level through systems’ biology analysis and modeling tools, metabolic engineering and bioimaging. Powerful experimental platforms are avialable such as well equipped fermenters, analytical instruments and laser based microscopy. The department offers highly qualified education for engineering students within the area of bioengineering. It is furthermore collaborating in broad, interdiciplinary national and international networks within academia and the industry.

The division of Food and Nutrition Science is one of four research divisions at the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering. Food and Nutrition Science is one of the leading units in the area in Sweden with particular strengths in nutritional and computational metabolomics, dietary biomarkers, micronutrient metal nutrition, nutritional immunology, marine food science and nutrition as well as food by-product biorefining. The division has a wide range of modern analytical equipment for chromatography coupled with mass spectrometery, an in vitro human cell laboratory, and a microbiology laboratory. The division focuses on nutritional solutions for health and disease prevention by studies on the molecular, cellular, and whole-body level. It also has a strong focus on sustainable use of food raw materials and on many different quality aspects of food.

Major responsibilities
The Post Doc position is part of a larger European project -BlueShell- which will explore the potential of shellfish shells for extraction of potential bioactive compounds following an enzymatic hydrolysis treatment. This particular position will address the analysis of anti-inflammatory properties of hydrolysates and its fractions as well as the characterization of lipids in the shellfish shell hydrolysates. The anti-inflammatory properties will be analysed using a human co-culture cell model (Caco-2/HepG2). Regarding lipid characterizations, focus will be on fatty acids, lipid classes, and lipid oxidation products. GC/MS and LC/MS-based methods will here mainly be used. This part is important to explain potential bioactive effects from a molecular perspective. Altogether the BlueShell project will largely facilitate value-adding to a raw material which today is mainly used for low value products, or in worse cases, is even wasted. Among expected products to come out of the project are new functional food ingredients.

Overall, responsible for experimental planning, practical work, data handling, writing of publications and communications of results within the BlueShell project.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment for one year, with the possibility of extension.

Qualifications
A Ph. D in biological/medical Science or similar is required. Further, you need skills in aseptic laboratory work, experience with molecular biological techniques such as ELISA, SDS-PAGE, and Western blot analyses as well as in chromatographic techniques and analyses of e.g. lipids. The candidate must also have experience in human cell culturing and be able to work independently in a cellbiological laboratory setting. Strong communication skills in English (oral and written).

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
