The University of Agder invites applications for a fixed term, full-time position for a period of three years as a post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Religion, Philosophy and History, Faculty of Humanities and Education. The position is located in Kristiansand. The starting date is 1 July 2017 or by agreement with the Faculty.
The department of Religion, Philosophy and History has 42 academic staff and about 500 students related to its degree programs.

The post-doctoral position is connected to a new, three-year interdisciplinary research project called “Computational Tools for Modeling Religious and Social Conflict.” This project is a collaboration between the “Modeling Religion in Norway” research group and the “Intelligent Systems” research group at the University. The scientific goal of the project is to use modeling and simulation technologies to gain deeper insight into the conditions that foster (or mitigate) religious and social conflict and violence, thereby providing new tools for evaluating hypotheses about – and policies for – religious and socio-political change in Norway, Northern Europe and beyond. The collaborative goal is to establish and promote an ongoing cross-faculty collaboration in which we strengthen and increasingly take advantage of the complementary sets of expertise represented in the two research groups. The post-doctoral fellow will be associated with the Department for Religion, Philosophy and History, but will also be working with faculty at the Department for Information and Communication Technology.

The ideal candidate would have expertise in at least three of the following areas: (1) modeling and simulation methodologies, especially agent-based modeling, (2) relevant programming languages and software, especially AnyLogic and/or NetLogo, (3) scientific study of religion and society, especially cognitive scientific and/or anthropological perspectives, (4) big data analysis, social network analysis and/or machine learning algorithms, and (5) experience and interest in grant-writing and interdisciplinary project development.

The job requires the ability to collaborate well within an interdisciplinary and international research team, working with computer modelers at the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (Suffolk, VA), with scholars of religion at the Institute for the Bio-Cultural Study of Religion (Boston, MA), and with a select group of scientific advisors and public-policy makers in Norway.

Further provisions relating to the position as post-doctoral fellow can be found in the Regulations Concerning Terms and Conditions of Employment for the Post of Post-doctoral Research Fellow, Research Fellow, Research Assistant, and Resident, available for download at http://www.lovdata.no/for/sf/kd/xd-20060131-0102.html

The post-doctoral fellow must have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g., modeling and simulation, scientific study of religion). It is desirable that applicants have graduated within the last five years. Applicants must have submitted their PhD thesis before the application deadline, and must have passed their PhD examination before appointment.

Assessment of applicants will include consideration of their PhD research, as well as other publications and research work. Consideration will also be given to the applicant’s personal and scholarly ability to contribute to the main project, as well as the applicant’s ability to cooperate with others as part of an interdisciplinary scholarly community. Relevant work experience will also be considered. Excellent oral and written communication skills are also required.

The working language of the project is English, but much of the empirical data related to one of the planned computer simulations is in Norwegian, so knowledge of a Scandinavian language would be beneficial. The appointee must be able to demonstrate excellent organizational skills, and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.

The Norwegian government aims to make the national labor force reflect the diversity of the population as much as possible. The personnel policy of the University of Agder supports the attempt to achieve a balanced composition of the work force. Short-listed applicants will be invited for an interview. References will be obtained in consultation with the applicants.

Appointments will be made by the Appointments Committee for Teaching and Research at the University of Agder. The successful applicant will have rights and obligations under the guidelines in force at the time they apply for the position.

The application and necessary information about education and experience must be submitted electronically, use the link “Apply for this job“.
The following documentation should be submitted as attachments to the online application:
° Statement of suitability for the job (up to 3 pages in English)
° CV
° Certified copies of certificates and diplomas
° List of publications

The applicant is fully responsible for submitting all the required documentation (in sufficient number) within the deadline. Without complete documentation we cannot, unfortunately, include you in the assessment process.
