The Society, Work, and Development Institute (SWOP) and the Sociology Department at the University of the Witwatersrand seek to recruit a Ph.D Fellow for a Volkswagen Foundation funded research project – “Networked Religiocities” – within the framework of the funding initiative: Knowledge for Tomorrow: Fellowships in the Humanities in Sub-Saharan and North Africa . The scholarship will cover a monthly living stipend, student medical cover, and tuition fees for a period of 36 months.

Research Project: “Networked Religiocities: Transnational Urban Religious Flows in Africa”

Requirements:
Masters Degree in Sociology, Anthropology, Urban Studies, Political Studies, Religious Studies, or related disciplines, with an average pass of at least 70% and above. The candidate must have proven research interests in questions of religion, of the urban, and/or of transnationalism.

Scope of Work:
The Fellow is expected to conduct doctoral research, focusing on an “innovative” topic relating to the (re-) generative potency of religious networks, circuits, and/or flows between Lagos (Nigeria) and Johannesburg (South Africa). S/he will be registered in the Department of Sociology at the University of the Witwatersrand. The Fellow will work very closely with, and will be supervised by, Dr. Obvious Katsaura who is the lead researcher for the “Networked Religiocities” project.
