Tyndall National Institute at University College, Cork invites applications for a PhD opportunity.

The EPN group, Tyndall National Institution and University College Cork fund a PhD position on “quantum optics and quantum information with site-controlled dots “.

We are seeking highly self-motivated applicants with strong experimental attitude to apply for this position.

The research will focus on developing and characterising semiconductor site-controlled artificial atoms for quantum information processing. Recent results on the unique system developed at Tyndall were featured in major reviews, such as Nature Photonics (e.g. Gediminas Juska,et al. “Towards quantum dot based arrays of entangled photon emitters”, Nature Photonics 7, 527 (2013); T. H. Chung, et al. “Selective carrier injection into patterned arrays of pyramidal quantum dots for entangled photon light-emitting diodes”, Nature Photonics 10, 782–۷۸۷ (۲۰۱۶)).

Two main research directions will be addressed by the PhD candidate in collaboration with the EPN team: one will be that of developing resonant pumping techniques and sample processing to obtain nearly perfect entanglement from Pyramidal dots. The second direction will be that of characterising the dot emission not only in terms of entanglement purity, but that of analysing other “quantum” properties, such as discord, and to develop, in collaboration with the Quantum Technology group in Queen’s University, new quantum processing techniques based on such quantities, allegedly, more “robust” than entanglement.

These studies will provide an excellent base for a career both in academia and in the high-value industry.

The Epitaxy and Physics of Nanostructures group was established in January 2007 at Tyndall National Institute (http://www.tyndall.ie) under an SFI (http://www.sfi.ie/home/index.asp) Principal Investigator grant. The group is led by Dr. E. Pelucchi.

Requirements

  • The minimum academic qualification is a first or upper second class honours degree (or an equivalent international degree) in physics, electronic engineering or related relevant discipline.
