Landscape architecture combines artistic, scientific and technical expertise. It is an internationally important discipline and a growing profession in Finland; its scope has diversified and increased significantly. The Landscape Architecture degree programme at Aalto University is Finland’s only academic institute in the field of landscape architecture. The degree programme is currently divided into three study areas: 1) landscape design and construction, 2) landscape planning and management, 3) urban design and planning (shared with the Degree Programme of Architecture).

Doctoral candidate, Landscape Planning & Sustainable Development

The position begins in 1 April, 2017 or as agreed. The assignment is maximum of four years.

The position is available at the Department of Architecture, where a new research line is being created to work on Landscape Planning & Sustainable Development. In particular, the future researcher is expected to concentrate his or her activity in at least one of the following fields:

  • Green-Blue Infrastructures, Ecosystem Services and Sustainable Urban Metabolisms
  • Landscape Urbanism
  • Landscape Planning and Management
  • Landscape Characterization and Assessment
  • Landscape Ecology and Ecological Urban Planning
  • Sustainable Development
  • Urban resilience: tools and strategies

Main duties and responsibilities of the doctoral candidate

Full time doctoral candidates are expected to complete their doctoral degree in four years, during which they should complete their D.Sc. thesis and doctoral studies, doing own research and publishing the results, participate in research projects, write journal articles around their topic area and teach relevant courses.

In addition, the selected doctoral candidate will be expected to participate actively in the development of funding applications (grant writing) on International and National programs in order to advance in his/her research work, extend his/her international networks and create the economic conditions for the possible extension of his/her contract.

Key selection criteria

  • A Masters level degree in landscape architecture, architecture, planning or another related or relevant field
  • A postgraduate study place in Aalto University (Doctoral Program of Arts, Design and Architecture)
    If the applicant does not have such status or study place, he/she should apply for it at the same time as he/she applies for the current doctoral candidate position. In this case, the assessment of the application for the current position will be dependent on the previous admission of the doctoral candidate by the Doctoral committee of the Department of Architecture and the Aalto School of ARTS.   • Research and practice experience in the before mentioned fields
  • Experience in grant writing and project management in funded projects
  • Ability for collaborative work in research-related contexts.
  • Excellent skills in English
  • Excellent writing skills in English
  • Advanced knowledge in GIS, AutoCAD, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator.

Salary and location
The monthly salary will be paid according to the University’s salary scheme, depending on the candidate’s expertise and tasks, from 2200 eur upwards. The position is located at Aalto University’s Otaniemi campus in Espoo.
