Aalto University is a community of bold thinkers where science and art meet technology and business. We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. Aalto University has six schools with nearly 20 000 students and more than 400 professors. Our campuses are located in Espoo and Helsinki, Finland.

We are looking for a Ph.D. Student to the Academy of Finland project “Ultra-fast fMRI and fMRI-EEG methods for mapping hemodynamic and neuronal brain responses to naturalistic stimuli”. The work will be done at the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering (NBE) of Aalto University School of Science in close collaboration with the Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Automation. The work will be done under the guidance of Prof. Fa-Hsuan Lin.

The aim in the project is to develop fast functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) methods and integrate that with concurrent electroencephalography (EEG) inside the magnet. Furthermore, we will explore how fMRI can be integrated with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to achieve imaging and intervention at the same experimental setup. These technologies will be applied to study how the human brain reacts to naturalistic and complex stimuli.

The task of the Ph.D. student is to participate the research and guide other students allocated to the project. The Ph.D. student is also expected to write high-quality scientific publications on the research results together with other members of the team.

An ideal candidate has a good knowledge in some or all of the following areas: methodology and technology for magnetic resonance imaging (pulse sequence programming; RF/DC electronics), electromagnetics, MEG, EEG, TMS, and biomedical signal processing.

The position is located at the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus. The expected duration of doctoral studies is four years, but a contract is first made for one year, and the extension is subject to advance of studies and research. The salary is according to the salary system of Aalto University. The contract includes Aalto University occupational healthcare.
