دانشگاه کمبریج (University of Cambridge) در شهر کمبریج بریتانیا در کنا رودخانه کَم، واقع شده است. این دانشگاه در سال ۱۲۰۹ تأسیس شده و دومین دانشگاه قدیمی در منطقه انگلیسی زبان و سومین دانشگاه قدیمی در جهان به شمار می‌آید. از آنجا که دانشگاه آکسفورد نیز قدمتی قدیمی دارد، از این رو به این دو دانشگاه، «دانشگاه‌های باستان» می‌گویند و نام آنها را آکسبریج نهاده اند.
اولین سند رسمی که به تأسیس دانشگاه کمبریج اشاره می‌کند سندی است مربوط به هنری سوم انگلستان که به دانشگاه کمبریج اجازه تربیت اعضای خود و یکسری امتیازاتی همچون معافیت‌های مالیاتی را می‌دهد. سند بعدی نیز گرگوری نهم در سال ۱۲۳۳ در این ارتباط دارد که به دانش‌آموخته‌های این دانشگاه اجازه تدریس به جامعه مسیحی را می‌دهد.
در ابتدا فقط مردها اجازه ورود و تحصیل در کمبریج را داشتند. اولین دانشکده خانم‌ها با نام کالج گیرتن، توسط امیلی دیویس در سال ۱۸۶۹ تأسیس شد؛ بعد از آن و در سال ۱۸۷۲ دانشکده نون‌هام تشکیل شد. کالج‌های دیگری نیز برای خانم‌ها در سال‌های ۱۸۸۵، ۱۹۵۴ و ۱۹۶۵ تشکیل یافت. اولین امتحانی که از دانشجویان خانم گرفته شد در سال ۱۸۸۲ بود ولی تا سال ۱۹۴۸ خانم‌ها به عنوان عضو کامل دانشگاه محسوب نمی‌شدند.
مرکز اصلی دانشگاه در شهرکمبریج قرار دارد و بیشتر دانشجویان در همین شهر ساکن هستند. دانشجویان ساکن حدود ۲۰% کل جمعیت شهر را تشکیل می‌دهند.
دانشکده‌ها هرکدام خودمختار بوده و دارایی و محل کسب درآمد خود را جداگانه دارند و عضو جداناپذیر دانشگاه محسوب می‌شوند. تمام دانشجویان عضوی یکی از این دانشکده‌ها هستند.
کمبریج ۳۱ دانشکده دارد که از این میان، ۳ دانشکده فقط مخصوص خانم‌ها و باقی دانشکده‌ها مختلط است. البته پیش‌تر و در سال‌های دور همه دانشکده‌ها فقط برای مردها بودند. دانشکده داروین اولین دانشکده کمبریج بود که حاضر به پذیرفتن مختلط هم آقایان و هم خانم‌ها شد. هزینه‌های دانشکده‌ها نیز برای دانشجویان (اقامت و تغذیه) بستگی به دانشکده دارد و با هم فرق دارند.
علاوه بر ۳۱ دانشکده موجود، بیش از ۱۵۰ دپارتمان و مرکز مختلف دیگر در این دانشگاه در حال کار هستند. اعضای این مراکز معمولاً از اعضای یکی از همان ۳۱ دانشکده اصلی هستند.
هر سال تحصیلی بر اساس قوانین دانشگاه به ۳ دوره (ترم) تقسیم می‌شود. یک ترم از ماه اکتبر تا دسامبر. ترم دیگر از ژانویه تا مارس و ترم دیگر از آوریل تا ژوئن. مدت زمان ترم‌ها به نسبت دانشگاه‌های دیگر بسیار کوتاه است.
دانشگاه کمبریج ثروتمندترین دانشگاه در کل بریتانیا و قاره اروپااست. دارایی این دانشگاه در سال ۲۰۱۱ برابر بود با ۴٫۱ میلیارد یورو که ازاین رقم ۱٫۶ میلیارد یورو مستقیماً مربوط به خود دانشگاه و ۲٫۷ میلیارد یورو مربوط به دانشکده‌هاست. (دارایی دانشگاه آکسفورد در سال ۲۰۱۱ برابر بود با ۳٫۳ میلیارد یورو). بودجه عملیاتی این دانشگاه ۱ میلیاد دلار در هر سال است. عمده درآمد دانشگاه کمبریج توسط دولت انگلیس بخاطر تدریس و تحقیقات علمی به دانشگاه داده می‌شود. در سال ۲۰۰۶ و ۲۰۰۷۷ حدود یک سوم درآمد این دانشگاه را دولت انگلیس بخاطر تحقیقات پرداخته کرده بود. همچنین انتشارات دانشگاه کمبریج نیز محل خوبی برای کسب درآمدهای بالا برای این دانشگاه است.

A fully funded 3 year PhD Studentship is available from October 2017 to work on Power Efficient Rack Scale Fabrics. Rack-Scale Computing is an emerging field in systems which explores the tight integrated design of server, networking and storage. This then becomes the basic building block in enterprise data centers and cloud infrastructure. Rack-scale computing provides superior performance compared with rack enclosures fitted with stand-alone servers, providing scalable high performance networked systems. This project has two goals, the first is to investigate power efficient rack-scale fabrics. Rack-scale computers are bounded by the power budget of their enclosure and their performance will always be limited by their power consumption. From studying the power efficiency and bottlenecks of existing fabric topologies, both from the data center and HPC world, we will develop new power efficient rack-scale fabric architectures. These fabric architectures will be evaluated using a simulator, and then implemented and evaluated in actual systems using real workloads. There is currently no widely adopted simulator in this emerging rack-scale computing field. As this will be needed to evaluate the power efficient rack-scale fabric architectures, the second goal is to develop the de facto standard simulator for designing and evaluating rack-scale computing. We plan to take the current Microsoft Research Rack-Scale Simulator, which was used to evaluate Pelican, XFabric and other rack-scale designs, and to work closely with Microsoft Research researchers to generalize and extend it. We plan to use our experiences building open source communities to drive adoption across the emerging rack-scale computing community.
Candidates should have a 1st class degree in computer science, electronic engineering, mathematics or a closely related discipline, with an experience and interest in Computer Networks. Experience programming in languages such as C++ is required. Experience working with FPGA and knowledge of HDL is an advantage. This project will require a hands-on approach and the expectation is that self-motivated candidates with excellent interpersonal skills and abilities will perform excellent research leading to high quality outcomes and publications.
This Studentship is funded as a Microsoft EMEA PhD Scholarship award, in collaboration with Microsoft Research Cambridge. For UK/EU eligible-students this covers a stipend and fees. Non-UK/EU students may require additional funding for the higher level of fees. In the Faculty of Computer Science and Technology, all first-year research students are admitted on a probationary basis, and will be registered for the Certificate of Postgraduate Studies in Computer Science.
