Tyndall National Institute is a world leader in the development of wearable sensor systems for use “in the body, on the body and around the body”. Working closely with a global range of academic, business and clinical partners, our technology is under evaluation by several multinational corporations and is approaching market readiness in a number of areas. In parallel, Tyndall has an ambitious ‘ICT for Health’ strategy that will leverage our core strengths in Information and Communications Technologies to develop the next generation of breakthrough sensing systems for wearable smart systems. There is a growing demand for wearable smart systems for healthcare applications, which are enabled through a variety of embodiments of smart systems. These sensing systems can be on the body or around the body, and need to be miniaturised (i.e. non-intrusive), self-powered, and low cost, for monitoring vital health signals and capturing critical data for enabling appropriate interventions. This could include capture of electrical (e.g. EEG, ECG and EMG), position and localization (e.g. accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers), and biosensors (e.g. pulse oximetry, biochemical analysis of specified biomarkers such as glucose and lactate). These devices need to locally process the captured data and communicate within the body sensor network, via a local data aggregator such as a mobile device, to the cloud. Tyndall National Institute – University College Cork, invites applications for an Industrial Knowledge Transfer Fellow (PhD student) who is ambitious, high-calibre graduate in a subject related to the needs of the CALIN Operation. Projects are industrially focused and cover wearable sensing technology for healthcare applications. The project will involve collaboration with industry partner(s), Welsh academic partner(s) and multi-disciplinary researchers across the full value chain of wearable systems, including microsystems technology, wireless sensors, electronics and low power system design, biochemical and electrophysiological sensing, and data analytics. The position provides the opportunity to develop innovative solutions for continuous monitoring of clinical parameters in a wearable smart system, as well as gaining valuable experience in design, fabrication and testing of wearable devices and systems. The successful candidate will get the experience of presentation to international conferences and workshops, industry meetings, and publication of the research in high impact journals. These individuals will facilitate knowledge and technology transfer through innovative 3-4yr research activities to allow businesses to solve long-term, strategic issues. The industrial partners will provide support, supervision and direction throughout the research activity. In addition to research delivery, the Associates will also contribute to workshop events and network conferences where they will present case- studies. The CALIN project is part-funded by ERDF under the Ireland Wales Programme 2014-2020.

Responsibilities

The Industrial Knowledge Transfer Fellows will be expected to:

  • Conduct laboratory based collaborative research activities with an industry-related focus in the main research themes of the CALIN Operation and Tyndall.
  • Pro-actively contribute to and conduct research, including gather, prepare and analyse data, generate original ideas and present results.
  • Prepare reports, draft patents and papers describing the results of the research, both confidential and for publication.
  • Presentation of data both internally and externally, including as oral presentation and written reports and publications.
  • Contribute to network conferences, technology-workshops and maintenance of up to date website news pieces.
  • Interact positively and professionally with all industrial and academic partners in the CALIN Operation, and collaborators from other public sectors including health-care professionals.
  • Be self-motivated, apply and use own initiative, aiming to determine suitable ways to tackle challenges and seeking guidance when needed.
  • Keep informed of developments in the field in technical, specific and general terms and their wider implication for the discipline area, commercial applications and the knowledge economy
  • Demonstrate and evidence own professional development.
  • To promote equality and diversity in working practices and to maintain positive working relationships.
  • To fully engage with CALINs Welsh / Irish Language policies.

Requirements

  • A first or upper second class honours degree, or a relevant master’s level qualification, in a
  • life science related subject.
  • Evidence of some laboratory based experimental research experience.
  • An understanding of the operational requirements for a successful research project.
  • Excellent Communication Skills (Oral, Written, Presentation etc).

Desirable

  • Evidence of ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Evidence of planning skills to contribute to the research project.
