A position as postdoctoral research fellow (SKO 1352) is vailable at the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics, a Norwegian Centre of Excellence.

The fellowship period is 3 years. The preferred starting date is August 1st, ۲۰۱۷٫ Note that no one can be appointed for more than one specified period at the same institution.

Project description

The position is available through the project “A Model of Global Tectonics for the Last 600 Myr”, funded through the Norwegian Research Council. This project aims to construct a full-plate kinematic model that seamlessly captures the tectonic evolution of Earth from the Ediacaran (600 Ma) to the present day, and is to be released to the public domain by 2021.

The researcher will contribute to the development of this model through construction of new regional Neoproterozoic and early Paleozoic (600-400 Ma) plate tectonic models, as well as through upgrades to existing late Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic models. Problems posed to the researcher will include the compilation and analysis of large and complex geologic, paleomagnetic and paleontological datasets, and the synthesis of those data into self-consistent, regional kinematic models. Further work will include model evaluation (and improvement) through characterization and assessment of model properties, such as true polar wander and net lithosphere rotation.

Qualifications

Experience in plate tectonic modeling, paleogeographic reconstruction or paleomagnetism is required. Familiarity with Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic tectonics, the plate modeling software Gplates, and basic script-writing skills (Bash, Python, etc.) are also desirable. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with several groups within CEED (Dynamic Earth, Earth Modeling, Earth Laboratory), and the ability to work cooperatively and productively within a team is required.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

The candidate must have a PhD or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in Geosciences.

The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines.

Please also refer to the regulations pertaining to the conditions of employment for post-doctoral fellowship positions:
