Information about the research/the project/the division
The department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is the largest department at Chalmers having around 300 employees organised under four administrative divisions: Chemistry and Biochemistry, Applied Chemistry, Energy and Materials and Chemical Engineering. It is situated at campus Johanneberg in the central of Gothenburg. Guided by our vision “Through curiosity and knowledge towards a sustainable world”, we are highly committed to frontline research and teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate level. We are active both in fundamental sciences and applied research driven by industrial and societal needs.

The division of Applied Chemistry is active within Biopolymer Technology, Pharmaceutical Technology, Polymer Technology and Applied Surface Chemistry. The latter hosts a variety of projects devoted to bio-inspired materials, new catalytic materials and ionic based electrolytes to mention a few. Several skills, theoretical as well as experimental, are gathered through young and engaged research leaders in a friendly environment.

Applied Surface Chemistry is also highly enganed in the national interdisciplinary research center Competence Centre for Catalysis (KCK) established in 1995. KCK is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, Chalmers and the member companies; AB Volvo, ECAPS AB, Haldor Topsøe A/S, Scania CV AB and Volvo Car Corporation AB. The activity at KCK is focused on three main areas of research namely i) catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) under lean conditions, ii) catalytic oxidation at low temperatures and iii) catalytic techniques for sustainable energy systems. The activity at KCK is closely integrated with the four research groups at Chalmers; Chemical Physics, Microscopy and Microanalysis, Applied Surface Chemistry and Chemical Reaction Engineering at the Departments of Applied Physics, and Chemical and Biological Engineering. KCK comprises 15 senior researchers, and 25 PhD students and postdocs with equal distribution between male and females.

The postdoc position is part of a twin-postdoc project entitled “Understanding Catalyst Ignition/Extinction at the Fundamental Level” which is shared between the division of Applied Chemistry and division of Chemical Physics. It is granted by the Chalmers Area of Advance Transport. The postdoc position concerns development of operando infrared (IR) spectroscopy with high time resolution, so-called step-scan mode, for probing of surface chemistry and morphology of reactive supported nanoparticles. The main activity is to develop an experimental methodology for this purpose and use this to understand catalytic processes during ignition and extinction. A major scientific challenge is to experimentally advance the time-resolution for operando measurements towards the instrumental limit of 2.5 ns. The methodology will pave the way for attaining critical information that will support a knowledge-based design of chemical technologies based on supported nanoparticles. Further, state-of-the-art experimental methods both at KCK/Chalmers and at international synchrotrons may be used depending on upcoming complementary needs. The position may thus include travelling and cooperation with other scientists mostly in Europe.

Major responsibilities
The postdoc position is devoted to research with focus on developing step-scan IR spectroscopy for studies on supported nanoparticle systems. It includes, e.g., design and synthesis of supported nanoparticle model systems, development of necessary reaction cells, design and implementation of electronics allowing for step-scan IR spectroscopy and development of tools for reliable spectroscopic analysis. The work involves collaboration with researchers in the field as well as technicians and workshop experts. Depending on the needs, other advanced experiments using X-ray based methods at international large-scale synchtrotron facilities may be included as a complement.

Position summary
The position is a full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to one year with possibility fo one-year extension, i.e. maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
It is mandatory that all moments for the PhD degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or similar is fulfilled before 2017-04-30 and that the examination is complete before 2017-06-15. Meritious skills: Experience in time-resolved infrared spectroscpy and instrumental development; Experince in electronics control, signal processing and related computer programming; Quality-conscious with an innovative way of thinking. Also the project involves international colaborations and thus fluent english is required.
