Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, invites applications for a Doctoral Candidate Position in Computational Mechanics and Structural Engineering

The position is offered for a period of 4 years nominally required for finalizing DSc degree studies and dissertation (including a midterm review after the first 1–۲ years). Applications from MSc students completing their studies during the autumn term 2017 are welcome as well, although the application deadline is July 31.

Job description
The position is targeted for talented and passionate graduates aiming at an academic or industrial research and development career path. Research will be accomplished in the research group of Computational Structural Engineering and Mechanics focusing on models and methods for mechanics of solids and structures for engineering applications (see the details below).

The research area under consideration is a classical and central field of civil engineering and full of challenging applications extending to different fields of science and engineering. The research group, department and university provide strong support and academic freedom with possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration, both internationally and within Aalto University.

Teaching assistance duties of the position are limited to about 10 % of working hours and are related to Master’s program in Building Technology and/or Bachelor’s program Minor in Computation and Modelling in Engineering. Opportunities for pedagogical studies and instructing Master’s and Bachelor’s Theses are available as well.

Research group
The theoretical focus of the research group led by Prof. Jarkko Niiranen situates in the crossroads of Theoretical and Applied Mechanicsand Numerical Analysis with specific themes combining Computational MechanicsStructural Mechanics and Computational Structural Engineering. The team currently focuses on models and methods for mechanics of solids and structures, especially finite element methods (FEM) and isogeometric analysis (IGA) for mechanics of thin structures, such as plates, shells and beams, combined with both classical and generalized continuum theories. Activities range from continuum models and related numerical methods all the way down to programming, software issues and applications, such as structural analysis and design as well as integration of Computer-Aided Design / Building Information Modeling (CAD/BIM), Computer-Aided Engineering / Finite Element Analysis (CAE/FEA) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM). Research results of the group have been published in the leading journals of the aforementioned fields.

The applicational focus of the research group is on small-scale research and teaching projects accomplished by multi-faceted Design+Analysis teams focusing on computational methodologies in structural engineering combined with parametric and algorithmic architecture and design. The primary focus is currently on isogeometric methods for thin-walled structures. New materials and digitalized production technologies will be essential side topics as well, with links to research groups of the site university working on complex materials and digital design methodologies, especially. Collaboration with industry is typically conducted within related Master’s Thesis projects.

The majority of the current research activities is funded by Academy of Finland, through a project entitled Isogeometric adaptive methods for thin-walled structures – with applications from architectural and industrial design in structural and mechanical engineering.

The group has strong international and national partners for collaboration, whereas at Aalto University the research groups in the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Applied Mathematics as well as research platforms Digi and Materials are the most natural ones for collaboration. The group belongs to the departmental research focus area of eight professorships entitled Mineral-based Materials and Mechanics having collaboration with the other focus area, Building Design and Construction.

Requirements
Applicants must (i) have completed a Master’s degree in a related field, (ii) show excellent or very good scholastic records for MSc and BSc studies (grades 5 or 4 within scale 0–۵), (iii) have some programming experience with the Matlab/Octave syntax and/or Fortran or C languages. Good working skills in English, both written and spoken, are required.

Backgrounds in the following fields – ranging from Civil and Mechanical Engineering to Applied Physics and Mathematics – are preferred:

  • Computational Mechanics / Structural Mechanics / Theoretical and Applied Mechanics
  • Computational Structural Engineering / Architectural Engineering
  • Applied Mathematics / Numerical Analysis

For the candidate chosen for the current position, an official Aalto University application process for doctoral studies will be accomplished (and assumed to be passed):
