LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY
Hereby advertises a position as

PhD student in Language and Culture within the research project ”Vocal Practices of Coordinating Human Action”,

formally placed at the Department of Culture and Communication (IKK), at the Graduate School of Language and Culture in Europe.

IKK involves a broad spectrum of human sciences, including practical aesthetic subjects. Doctoral studies are carried out at the research schools of Language and Culture in Europe and Pedagogical Practice.

Duties
As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research towards the goals of the project “Vocal Practices of Coordinating Action”. You will be responsible for both fieldwork, transcription, and analysis. As a PhD student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.

The PhD degree at the research school of Language and Culture in Europe is awarded as a “PhD in language and culture”.

The Graduate School is a forum for interdisciplinary linguistic and literary research informed by a cultural perspective. It takes its point of departure in the linguistic expression in all its diversity, ranging from the colloquial to the solemn, the spontaneous to the formal, the everyday to the artistic. The common thread linking the Graduate School as a whole is its focus on the study of language processes and products in their cultural context and in a European perspective. This orientation is in character both cross-disciplinary and multidisciplinary and has three principal angles of approach: cultural theory, literary theory and linguistic theory.

The PhD position is announced within the research project ”Vocal Practices of Coordinating Human Action” (funded by the Swedish Research Council), led by professor Leelo Keevallik.

This project explores the boundaries of language by studying non-lexical vocalizations at the intersection of vocal and embodied behavior. Using the qualitative method of multimodal interaction analysis it looks at the capacity of vocalizations to coordinate participants’ bodies, and compares that with linguistic recruitments and instructions. It aims to disclose how fine-grained cooperation is achieved by the use of both verbal and non-verbal means, thus combining linguistics and phonetics with ethnography and microsociology. Its empirical foundation is constituted by video-recorded data from e.g. manual workplace, sports coaching, or improvisational arts.

Requirements for the position are a solid background in linguistics, phonetics or cognitive science, an ability to take initiatives in fieldwork and formulate independent research questions. An excellent documented command of Swedish or English in speech and writing is a must in order to function in the research environment. Experience in video-based fieldwork and multimodal interaction analysis, with related technological know-how, will be deemed as an advantage.

Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.
Requirements include higher education amounting to at least 240hp (4 years), with at least 60hp at advanced level – or equivalent from another country – within fields such as linguistics, phonetics, sociology, anthropology, or cognitive science.
