Job description

PhD student position “Understanding the self in autism” Ghent University, Belgium Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences Research group EXPLORA

We are seeking a highly motivated full‐time PhD student for a project with a duration of 4 years investigating the role of self and self-other distinction in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The research will be under the supervision of prof. dr. Roeljan Wiersema and in collaboration with prof. dr. Marcel Brass.

Behavioural and neuroimaging (EEG and/or fNIRS) techniques will be applied. Previous expertise or training in (cognitive) neuroscience is preferred but not mandatory, while active knowledge of Dutch is a strong advantage (working with clinical populations in Flanders).

Environment: Ghent offers an exciting environment and high standards of living. Our research group offers access to fNIRS facilities and several high‐density scalp EEG systems. Scholarship: starting approx. €۱۹۰۰,- per month after taxes.

Profile of the candidate

Project: Control over representations of self and other (referred to as self-other control or distinction) is a low-level neurocognitive mechanism underlying many forms of social cognitive processes, including theory of mind (ToM), strongly affecting daily life social interaction and communication. While there is ample evidence of impairments in self-other control in ASD, most of the research has focused on difficulties in processing others’ mental states (ToM). A deficit in self-other distinction is also expected to lead to difficulties with self-related processing (self-referential processing). This has indeed been confirmed in several studies, however more systematic research, also at the brain level, is warranted to better understand the role of self in ASD. In the current project, we aim to further our understanding of self-related processing in ASD and how it relates to difficulties in self-other control, ToM, and daily life social functioning. For this, we will also use neuro-imaging techniques such as EEG and fNIRS.

How to apply

The position will preferably start January 1 or February 1, 2018. Review of applications will start immediately and continue until the position is filled. Required application materials to be sent electronically (preferably PDF):

cover letter, CV, and contact details of 2 academic referents. Informal inquiries and applications can be addressed to Roeljan Wiersema via email: .
