Background

Leiden Observatory was founded in 1633 and the oldest university astronomy department in the world with a distinguished history. The work of famous astronomers such as De Sitter, Hertzsprung, Oort, Blaauw, and Van de Hulst made Leiden an internationally renowned center of astronomical research. The Walraven Scholarship is named after the Dutch pioneer of high-precision photoelectric photometry and genius in instrumentation Theodore (Fjeda) Walraven (1916 – ۲۰۰۸).

Leiden Observatory offers a wide range of Astronomy master’s specialisations in which students actively participate in front-line research. Many of the students who have obtained their master’s degree in Leiden enroll in the PhD programme, during which they are paid a very competitive salary for four years.

Disclaimer

The student is responsible for submitting a complete application, according to the steps described above and before the aforementioned deadline. Leiden University or the Education Office Astronomy cannot be held responsible for late and/or incomplete applications.
