Topic: Valorisation of crude glycerol by Clostridia spp.
The acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation by certain Clostridia has been an industrially important microbial production process for already 100 years – based on starch and sugar. While many Clostridia are known to be able to convert glycerol to 1,3-PDO only one species has been described so far, to be able to efficiently ferment glycerol to butanol (C. pasteurianum). However, we are convinced that the pool of potential strains of interest must be much greater. This PhD position is dedicated to the identification of strains with interesting metabolic traits and a first characterization of the external parameters triggering butanol formation from glycerol.
