DTU Nanotech conducts cross-disciplinary research where micro- and nanotechnology is applied to a wide range of scientific disciplines as well as applications. The Nanoprobes group is a large and highly multi-cultural group, with different research branches focusing on drug delivery, biosensing and environmental monitoring. Come and join our exciting research!

Responsibilities and tasks
One of our PhD students is unfortunately soon finishing. We therefore wish to employ a new PhD student for 3 years to continue the exciting research direction and to take it to the next level. This might be you.

You will work in a highly interdisciplinary project focusing on integrating optical sensing on centrifugal platforms and applying these in the study of complex samples such as blood, urine and cell supernatants. The targeted applications are within diagnostics and fundamental studies drugs mechanism of action.

The main task is the development of centrifugal platforms with integrated sample pre-treatment steps and optical sensing (cell counting and agglutination assays). This includes fabrication of polymer discs and use of optical imaging system.
The work will be carried out in close collaboration with different national and international research groups, and within the framework of the Center of Excellence – IDUN (www.IDUN.dtu.dk).
You will play a role in the sensor section of the Nanoprobes group, interacting with several members working in different disciplines, such as microfabrication, plasmonics, electrochemistry, pharmacology and polymer science.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate holds a master’s degree (or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to master’s degree) in physics, nanotechnology, systems, biomedical, mechanical or chemical engineering. A master’s project or previous work experience regarding sensors, microfabrication or microfluidics will be beneficial. It is an advantage to have knowledge or experience within some of the following areas:

  • Microfluidics
  • Polymer fabrication
  • Assay development
  • SERS effects, or familiar with plasmonics
  • sensor development and application

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Professor Anja Boisen, Associate Professor Tomas Rindzevicius and Researcher Kinga Zor.

We offer
We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international environment focusing on education, research, scientific advice and innovation, which contribute to enhancing the economy and improving social welfare. We strive for academic excellence, collegial respect and freedom tempered by responsibility. The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is a leading technical university in northern Europe and benchmarks with the best universities in the world.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.

Workplace
Main workplace will be DTU Lyngby Campus, but the candidate will also be expected to have an external research stay.
